Women's Lacrosse Loses Tough Contest at Stevens, 11-10

Ducks Rally Late; Brown Four Goals for Red Hawks

Hoboken, NJ – Senior attack Kyra Bednarski scored six times, including the game-winner with 14 seconds left as Stevens rallied past Montclair State, 11-10 at the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Natalie Fitzpatrick added two goals as the Ducks (1-0) tallied the final three goals to upend its in-state rival. Stevens leads the all-time series 15-9, including wins in three of the last four meetings.

RHIANNON BROWN finished with four goals for MSU (1-1). KYLE GRAVER and AMBER GONZALEZ each scored twice.

The Red Hawks dug themselves out of an early three-goal deficit and was deadlocked at 6-6 in the second half when it went on a three-goal run to move in front. MEGAN MAHLSTADT set up AMBER GONZALEZ, giving MSU a 7-6 lead and then found Graver with 14:44 to go for an 8-6 lead. RHIANNON BROWN tallied 26 seconds later, making it a three-goal advantage for the Red Hawks.

Stevens trimmed the deficit to 9-8 as Bednarski scored twice, the second coming with 11:32 remaining. Montclair's SYDNEE SAPP registered her third of the year with 8:03 left for a two-goal lead for MSU, which held up until the final three minutes when the Ducks made their game-ending run.

Fitzpatrick got the first with 2:41 to play, and Maeve McGovern's goal off a Morgan Westerby assist tied the game with 94 seconds remaining. Fitzpatrick would win the ensuing draw and held possession. Westerby fired a shot with 32 ticks that went wide before Bednarski registered the game-winner. Westerby then sealed the game, pulling down the final draw.

Stevens scored the first three goals of the contest, however Montclair answered with four straight goals, three by Brown as the Red Hawks went up 4-3 with 15:17 to go in the first half. Emily Shanklin connected inside three minutes for Stevens as the teams went into the break deadlocked at 4-4.

AMANDA MAGUIRE made five saves for MSU, which got five draws from AMBER GONZALEZ and four by BRITTANY COSTIGAN. Graver and Maguire led the team with three ground balls apiece.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, March 4, as it travels to Madison, NJ, for another intra-state matchup. The Red Hawks take on FDU-Florham at Robert T. Shields Field beginning at 4:00 pm.
