Boyle's Overtime Winner Sends Men's Lacrosse to Fourth Straight Win

Sophomore Scored Four Goals On The Afternoon

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore CHRISTIAN BOYLE scored his fourth goal of the game 1:51 into overtime to send the Montclair State men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over the University of Scranton Saturday.

The Red Hawks (4-0) have won the last three games over the Royals (1-3) and is the second 11-10 win by Montclair in their previous three meetings. MSU won 11-10 back on April 28, 2018, with current Assistant Coach MATT HAEMMERLE scoring four times in the win.

Montclair wasted little time in getting on the board with junior KYLE MATTHEWS winning the opening faceoff and scoring himself nine seconds into the game. The two sides traded goals for the remainder of the period, as junior ROBERT BRENNAN converted a pass from JESSE JAMES WEST to give MSU a 2-1 lead. Scranton quickly answered back, scoring 21 seconds after the Brennan tally.

Junior MATTHEW MCLAREN and Shayne Fallon of the Royals held their ground in goal, making six saves apiece in the first half. McLaren was needed early on, fending off four Royal attempts in the first quarter alone. Boyle tallied two goals in the second quarter to give Montclair a 4-3 advantage, but Michael Elefonte scored with 1:05 left to level the game at four entering halftime.

After the Royals opened the second half scoring midway through the third stanza, Montclair went on a five-goal scoring spree to bridge the third and fourth quarters. West began the run before Brennan, and KYLE BIRKNER netted markers 20 seconds apart. Boyle completed his hat-trick with 51 ticks left in the third before TYLER MCCREERY capped off the run with an unassisted goal 2:22 into the fourth.

Scranton wasn't done, recording three goals in the first 6:53 of the fourth. West stopped the rally with a man-up goal off a McCreery pass at the 7:35 mark to re-establish a two-goal margin. The visitors got one back with 1:50 left in the frame, as Cole Lukasiewicz scored off a pass from Elefonte. The Royals won the ensuing faceoff and 55 seconds, pulled even at 10 on a conversion by Mike Bouhall. Scranton would have one final chance, but a shot by Jalen Holmes went wide with eight seconds to go.

Montclair won the opening faceoff of overtime on a violation, but shot attempts by McCreery, and sophomore MATT DANCSECS were off target. Off the reset, senior SKYLER FRANCISCO spotted a cutting Boyle on the far side. Boyle took the pass, moved in, faked a shot, and scored to give MSU their fourth consecutive victory.

West and Brennan each recorded two goals and an assist while McCreery notched a goal and an assist. Defensively, WILSON SMITH caused four turnovers and added four ground balls, as TYLER BALL contributed three caused turnovers and four ground balls. McLaren stopped 12 shots to move to 4-0. Fallon made 15 saves for Scranton, who had four players score two goals.

Montclair remains home on Wednesday, hosting Ursinus College at 4 pm. The Bears hold a 4-1 overall record against Red Hawks and won the last matchup 11-10 in three overtimes during their previous meeting in 2017.
