Aberdeen, MD – Sophomore CHRISTOPHER WALKER drove in one run and senior JUSTIN BATES during a three-run eighth inning as Montclair State rallied for a 4-1 victory over Stevenson University at the Ripken Experience on Tuesday.
Junior ANDREW OLLWERTHER collected his team-leading 17th run batted in as the Red Hawks (8-4) extended their winning streak to five games, completing a perfect 4-0 record on its Spring Break trip.
The Mustangs (7-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against MSU starter BRIAN REISS. Kevin Murray led off with a triple to right-centerfield and scored as Alex Kidwiler lofted a sacrifice fly. But that would be all the scoring Stevenson would get off the senior lefty over the next five innings.
Montclair State would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. MILES FEASTER opened the inning with a base hit and went to second on an errant pickoff throw. After a ground out, JOE NORTON was hit by a pitch putting runners at first and second. Mustang starter Sam Downs fanned the next hitter. However, Ollwerther came through with an RBI single tying the game at 1-1.
Relievers MIKE CANNAVO, ALEC BENZINGER, and CHRIS LUM kept the game even until the Red Hawks put together their winning rally in the eighth. PETER COSENTINO led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Ollwerther drew a walk before Walker doubled to right field, scoring Cosentino with the go-ahead run. Bates stepped to the plate and singled, bringing home two more runs making the score 4-1.
Junior JUSTIN SILVA allowed a one-out double to Nate Perkins but retired the next two hitters, including a strikeout to nail down his second save of the season.
Lum (1-0) got the victory, his first of the season. Reiss allowed six hits with three strikeouts in his six innings of work. Cosentino was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Montclair State will head back to Maryland on Sunday, March 15, for a doubleheader at Wilson College with first pitch scheduled for noon.
