Field Hockey Edged by Ramapo in NJAC Matchup, 1-0

Red Hawks Suffer Second Straight One-Goal Loss

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Victoria Docherty scored the game's lone goal 3:59 into the second period as Ramapo College knocked off Montclair State, 1-0 at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Kukan stopped six shots as the Roadrunners won for the fourth time in their last five outings, improving to 10-3 overall, 2-1 in the NJAC. The win was also Ramapo's first against MSU since the teams began playing each other in 2003.

LAUREN PICKUL made five saves for Montclair, which suffered its second consecutive one-goal defeat. MSU fell to 6-6 on the year, 1-2 in conference play.

Kukan kept the Red Hawks from an early first strike as she denied CARLIE VAN TASSEL in close less than two minutes into the contest. Pickul came up with a stop five minutes later and collected another save at 12:36 when the Roadrunners got three chances. MADDIE SPOLARICH swatted away as Docherty attempt for a defensive save with Pickul stopping Talitha Joustra's follow-up.

Scoreless through the first, Ramapo got on the board with Docherty's tally, her 19th of the season as she broke the Roadrunners' single-season record. Maggie Farrell flipped a ball in the circle down low. Mariah Tovar got a stick on it with the carom bouncing to Docherty, who slid a shot from past Pickul for the goal.

Kukan helped keep the advantage registering a trio saves over a 90-second span later in the period first coming up with a stop against GAB MAISTO. Kukan then fended off consecutive shots from LINSEY CHAMPA and Van Tassel before making her fifth save with 3:42 to go before halftime.

With Ramapo holding on to its one-goal advantage in the second half, both defenses clamped down as just three shots were taken over the final 30 minutes – all by Montclair State. CARLY AMERMAN had the only one that reached the cage, however Kukan kick-saved that one.

Montclair outshot Ramapo 8-6 with the Roadrunners holding the 5-3 edge in penalty corners.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 16 with the first of three road games. Montclair heads to York, PA for a 2:00 pm matchup at York College against the Spartans.
