York, PA – York College's Maggie Spadfora and Sarah Burton each scored in the second quarter, which proved to be the difference as the Spartans edged Montclair State, 2-1 on Saturday.
Hannah Huffman and Carrie Shuey each recorded an assist as the Spartans upped their record to 11-3 on the season while also earning its first win versus MSU in three tries. York fell to Montclair 3-2 in overtime in 2016 and 1-0 in a 2019 shootout at Sprague Field.
Freshman
GAB MAISTO had a goal for the Red Hawks (6-7), who lost their third straight game, all by one-goal margins.
Scoreless through the first and into the second, the Spartans snapped the tie with 10:23 left before halftime. Huffma fired a hard shot that Spadafora tipped on the doorstep for the 1-0 lead. It was Spadafora's sixth goal of the season. The lead moved to two goals with 2:11 left in the period on Burton's third goal of the year. Shuey sent a cross over to Burton, who finished off the feed in front of the cage.
The Red Hawks would get a chance to cut the lead down early in the fourth, however Kaitlyn Wallace stopped a
CARLEE THOMPSON shot. Moments later, Maisto banged in her own rebound off a blocked shot for her fourth of the season pulling MSU within 2-1 with 7:54 left.
LAUREN PICKUL had four saves for Montclair State.
The Red Hawks will stay on the road for their contest, albeit a much closer one. Montclair heads to Kean University on Tuesday, October 19 for a 7:30 matchup with the fourth-ranked Cougars.
