Union, NJÂ - Kean University, ranked No. 5 in Division III got two goals from Jordan Thompson during the second period as the Cougars topped Montclair State, 2-0 on Tuesday evening.
Goalkeeper LAUREN PICKUL stopped 10 shots for the Red Hawks (6-8, 1-3 NJAC).
Tightly contested through the first quarter, Kean got the majority of opportunities in the second. Pickul stopped Lia DiPiazza and Thompson on back-to-back shots in the first 1:42 of the frame, however, Thompson would find the back of the cage just shy of the two-minute mark. Collecting the ball outside, Thompson dribbled into the middle of the circle before firing a shot into the back of the cage for her 16th of the year.
Kean nearly added to that lead at the 18:38 mark as DiPiazza sent a shot on cage that defender MADDIE SPOLARICH kept from crossing the goal line.
Thompson would come up with her second with three minutes remaining before halftime, knocking in a rebound off her own shot that was saved by Pickul. Montclair was able to keep the game there as Spolarich came up with two more defensive saves in the final 15 seconds.Â
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 23. MSU makes the long trek to Galloway, NJ to face Stockton University at 1:00 pm.
