Football to Make Long Trek to Christopher Newport

Red Hawks Head to Southern Virginia to Face Captains

Montclair, NJ - After spending the last month at home, Montclair State ventures back out on the road this week with its longest trip of the year. The Red Hawks head to Newport News, VA to take on Christopher Newport University. Both, who played nine miles apart from each other last week, will look to bounce back from tough losses.

The Red Hawks enter the game following a 14-9 loss at home to The College of New Jersey. Cornerback ZAHIR WILDER returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown and also caught two passes for 51 yards. MSU nearly pulled off a miracle victory marching 73 yards to the TCNJ 16 in the final seconds. But a pass in the end zone on the final play fell short. Linebacker DORIAN GASHI led the Red Hawks defense with 12 tackles.

Over in Wayne, NJ, Christopher Newport had a 14-6 lead, but couldn't solve William Paterson's passing attack in a 48-28 loss to the Pioneers. Sophomore quarterback Matt Dzierski completed 22 of 28 pass attempts for 343 yards and three touchdowns.

This will be the sixth meeting between the schools with Montclair State holding a 3-2 edge. The first contest came in 2015 when the Captains joined the NJAC with MSU winning 32-22 following a dominant second-half performance. CNU earned victories in 2016 and 2017, the former a 28-21 win in overtime at home. Montclair has returned that favor with a 17-14 OT triumph in 2018 and posted a shutout, 24-0 in the last game between the teams in 2019 at Sprague Field.
