Montclair, NJ – Senior
CARLY WATERMAN registered a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs as Montclair State tied its 25-year-old winning streak record with a three-set sweep of Misericordia University at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
The Red Hawks (17-7) posted their 13
th consecutive victory, matching the mark set during the 1996 campaign. MSU also improved to 5-2 all-time against the Cougars (12-11) as the teams met for the first time since 2014.
Montclair dominated first set, hitting .526 with just two errors in 19 attempts in addition to serving up seven aces. After giving up the first point, the Red Hawks got the next four and were ahead 5-4 before going on an 11-point run. Waterman had four kills in the run as MSU led 16-4. Misericordia ended the run with the next two points however, MSU followed with a with an eight-point run to get to set point on a combo block by
SKYLAR KOWALSKI and
LEAH HIGGINS. The Red Hawks closed out the set on kill by Higgins as it went up 1-0 in the match with the 25-8 triumph.
The second set started off with a 10-point run by Montclair State as it took advantage of several hitting miscues by the Cougars.
DELANEY ST. PIERRE served two aces with
VICTORIA TENNON and Higgins each recording a kill. Two kills by Waterman and one by St. Pierre helped widen the lead to 18-6 with a pair of Kowalski kills putting MSU up 21-7. Montclair would finish off the set with the final three points for the 25-12 victory.
Set number three, would be much closer with the Cougars holding a 22-19 lead following kills by Faith Merritt and Jessica Oltman. The teams traded the next two points leaving MSU with a 23-20 deficit. Waterman went back-to-back with kills and an error by Misericordia knotted it up at 23-23. Waterman put down the last of her 14 kills before
KATELYN MONAGHAN served up an ace on match point capping off the set-ending five-point run.
St. Pierre finished with 30 assists, four kills and three digs while Monaghan led the way with 16 digs for MSU. Higgins totaled eight kills with Tennon adding three. All four players along with Waterman were honored prior to match on Senior Night.
Montclair State returns to action with a tough contest on Friday, October 22 in Brooklyn, NY. MSU meets No. 13 NYU in the first of three matches over the weekend. The Red Hawks are scheduled to face in-state rival Stevens and Catholic University on Saturday, October 23.
