Brooklyn, NY – The Montclair State women's volleyball team had their 13-match winning streak snapped by No. 13 New York University Friday evening.
Before tonight's setback, the Red Hawks (17-8) had equaled the largest winning streak in program history. Sophomore
SKYLAR KOWALSKI and senior
CARLY WATERMAN led the way with nine kills.
Montclair led 11-10 after an NYU (18-1) attack error, but the hosts tallied the following three points to take the lead back for good. The Violets went on a 6-1 spurt to open a six-point lead, as the Red Hawks could get as close as five the rest of the way.
NYU controlled the second set from the jump, racing out to an 8-2 lead. Montclair clawed back, using a 5-0 run with
KATIE RODMAN serving to trim the gap to 18-14, and forced NYU into a timeout. The timeout worked as NYU reeled off seven of the final 10 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After an NYU attack error made the third frame score 8-6, NYU broke the set open with a 7-1 spurt.
LEAH HIGGINS stopped the rally with a kill, but three more NYU markers opened up a double-digit lead. A Red Hawk attack error brought up match point, but the Red Hawks didn't back down. Montclair got within six, taking advantage of three attack errors coupled with an ace by
DELANEY ST. PIERRE and a kill from
GIANNA ARIAS. They could not get any closer, as Ella Weider closed the match out with a kill for the Violets.
NYU hit .352 on the night (45-14-88) while MSU hit at .138 clip (28-16-87). Higgins and Arias each tallied two block assists, as St. Pierre dished out 24 assists. Olivia Lewandowski had 11 kills for NYU in the victory.
The Red Hawks close out the NYU Invitational Saturday, facing Stevens at 12:30 pm and Catholic at 3 pm.
