Volleyball Knocks Off St. Joseph's-LI, Neumann in Home Tri-Match

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team swept St. Joseph's-Long Island and Neumann University in a home tri-match Saturday afternoon.
 
The Red Hawks (10-7) downed the Golden Eagles 25-10, 25-16, 25-12 before knocking Neumann 25-17, 25-13, 25-10.
 
In the opening frame, a Red Hawk attack error trimmed the deficit to 12-8, but the Red Hawks tallied 12 of the following 13 points to open up a 13-point lead. During the rally, CARLY WATERMAN delivered three aces while SKYLAR KOWALSKI pummeled home two kills. The Red Hawks closed out the first set thanks to a big kill from LEAH HIGGINS.
 
The Red Hawks trailed 6-3 in the second before KATELYN MONAGHAN propelled them into the lead with six straight markers, including two aces. With MSU up 12-11, the team went on a 7-1 spurt to jump in front for good. At the conclusion of the second frame, the last four points the Red Hawks scored came on kills from Waterman. The Red Hawks road momentum into the third set, opening up a 12-3 lead. The Golden Eagles got as close as seven before the Red Hawks could close out the match. Rookie NICOLE NAVARRO slammed home three kills during the period to help MSU finish it off.
 
The Red Hawks out-slugged the Golden Eagles .280-.010 and received double-digit kills from Waterman (11) and Higgins (10). DELANEY ST. PIERRE handed out 31 assists while Monaghan tallied a team-high 57 digs.
 
Montclair faced off against Neumann in the nightcap, who had just taken down St. Joseph's in straight sets. The first set was close, as the Knights got within a pair at 13-11 after a kill from Ariana Pena. Waterman served up three points, including an ace, to re-establish a six-point lead. The Knights would be able to get any closer than six, as Monaghan punctuated the opening game off with an ace.
 
St. Pierre keyed the second stanza rally, turning a 7-5 deficit into a 15-7 lead. At the end of the run, GIANNA ARIAS delivered a pair of blocks, which saw Neumann burn through both timeouts. The Knights committed 12 errors on the attack in the second set and hit a measly -.189 during the period. Higgins ended that game with a kill off a feed from St. Pierre. Like the second set, the third saw Neumann hit in the negatives again while committing 13 attack errors. The Red Hawks finished the match off on a 9-1 run, which ended on a big double-block from Arias and VICTORIA TENNON.
 
The Knights hit -.093 on the match, the lowest of any opponent this season. Arias tallied five kills and five block assists, while Waterman notched seven kills and 13 digs.
 
The Red Hawks resume NJAC play Tuesday as they host Ramapo College at 7 pm.
