Montclair, NJ – Senior outside hitter
CARLY WATERMAN had 12 kills while
DELANEY ST. PIERRE added five kills, 39 assists and six aces as Montclair State stretched its winning to seven matches in a 3-0 win against Ramapo College at the Panzer Athletic Center on Tuesday evening.
Senior
LEAH HIGGINS totaled 10 kills as the Red Hawks (11-7, 4-1 NJAC) swept past the Roadrunners, 25-20, 25-12 and 25-18. It was MSU's fourth straight victory versus Ramapo as it upped its lead in the all-time series to 31-10.
MSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, but found itself down 5-4 before embarking on a four-point run to go up 8-5 on a kill by Higgins. Ramapo would get within 11-9 before three consecutive kills by
VICTORIA TENNON, Higgins and Waterman boosted the lead back to 14-9. It was a 22-16 advantage for the Red Hawks as Waterman put down a kill but again Ramapo answered trimming the lead back to 22-19 on a block by Caleigh Golabek and Emily Shea. Following a timeout, Montclair would finish off the set with three of the final four points, including a kill from
SKYLAR KOWALSKI on set point.
Four straight to open the set got MSU off on the right foot in the second. Ramapo would get within 8-6, however Montclair State reeled off 10 consecutive points to build an 18-6 advantage. St. Pierre posted two of her kills in the spurt with Waterman serving up a pair of aces. Kowalski nailed down the set for MSU on the final point giving the Red Hawks the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Red Hawk would take another 4-0 lead to being the third, but Ramapo clawed back knotting things up at 7-7 on a kill from Ashley Pichardo. Montclair State countered with four in a row, two on kills y Waterman to go back up 11-7. MSU would hold off any attempt the Roadrunners would make to take the lead and managed to extend their own to 22-16 on a Kowalski kill. Ramapo would get two of the next three to trim its deficit to 23-18. However, the Red Hawks ended any further comeback as Kowalski posted the last of her seven kills and combined with Higgins on a block for match point.
GIANNA ARIAS chipped in with six kills with Tennon and Nadya Ackermaian each getting four. Wateman added three aces and 10 digs to her performance as MSU served up 11 in the match. The Red Hawks hit .313 on the night.
Montclair State goes right back to work on Wednesday, October 6 with another home match. MSU hosts FDU-Florham at 7:00 pm in a makeup of their season-opener washed out on September 1 due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida.
