Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward
CARLIE VAN TASSEL scored twice as Montclair State blanked local rival William Paterson 3-0, at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
LINSEY CHAMPA also scored as the Red Hawks improved to 6-4 while squaring their NJAC record at 1-1 with their 11
th consecutive win against the Pioneers. Emily Hoagland stopped seven for WPU (6-4, 0-2 NJAC).
Van Tassel got MSU on the board 50 seconds into the contest with her 10
th goal of the season. Off a penalty corner,
LINDSEY BICHER fired a ball from the right side. As the ball traveled toward the cage, Van Tassel was there to re-direct the shot by Hoagland giving the Red Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
William Paterson nearly tied it four minutes later as Kristin Freas-Papa ripped a shot from the left side that clanged hard off the post. Later in the period, Van Tassel flipped a shot that got by Hoagland, however Kourtney Scipio was there to sweep the ball away for the defensive save as MSU held it one-goal lead after the first period.
The Van Tassel goal would be the only score until early in the fourth period when the reigning NJAC Rookie of the Year, picked up a ball in the circle and maneuvered around two defenders before tapping in shot for her second of the year at the 1:28 mark of the fourth.
Champa tallied the final goal of the game with 2:37 left on a turnaround shot from the left side. It was Champa's third of the season.
