Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward Rachel Wright tipped in a shot with 3:03 remaining lifting Lebanon Valley to a 2-1 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Emily Kline picked up a goal and assist as the Flying Dutchmen (5-8) captured their third straight win and first in its three meetings with MSU. The two were squaring off for the first time since the 2016 campaign.
Freshman
TORI SUTERA scored for Montclair, which fell to 6-5 on the year.
The Red Hawks had the better part of momentum in the first period as it recorded all three shots.
EVYN STEWART had an attempt blocked two minutes in with
CARLEE THOMPSON' shot second later kicked away by LVC goalkeeper Corinne Kearney. Kearney also came up with a save against Thompson at the end of the quarter.
Kearney continued to keep MSU off the scoreboard in the second making back-to-back saves on
LINSEY CHAMPA and
LINDSEY BICHER during a penalty corner. She added her fifth with 10 minutes left, blocking away a Thompson attempt.
Lebanon Valley had a golden opportunity to put one on the board with 7:18 remaining before halftime. Danielle Alba ripped a shot from the left side that Montclair's
LAUREN PICKUL saved. However, the Red Hawks were whistled for a foul leading to a penalty stroke. Alba stepped to the mark and lifted a shot the Pickul deflected at the left post sending the contest into halftime scoreless.
Kline would get the first goal of the contest 2:50 into the second half, her second of the season. Taking the ball on the right side, Kline fired a shot from 10 yards out into the short side of the cage putting the Dutchmen in front, 1-0.
Montclair State answered right back as Sutera collected her third of the season at the 36:36 mark of the game. Van Tassel collected a ball in the middle and drove to within 10 yards before dropping a pass to Sutera, who tapped the feed into the wide-open goal knotting the contest at 1-1.
It stayed that way until the closing minutes when LVC got the go-ahead goal. Kline took a similar shot form the right side, only this time Wright was there to redirect in for her team-best fourth goal of the season.
Kearney finished with five saves while Pickul stopped three. Montclair State outshot LVC 10-8 in the contest, and also held the edge in penalty corners, 8-6.
Montclair State is back at Sprague Field on Wednesday, October 13 with its next NJAC contest. The Red Hawks, currently 1-1 in league play, host Ramapo College at 7:00 pm.
