Montclair, NJ – Senior swingman
IRVING CALLENDER IV posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as Montclair State built a double-digit halftime lead and cruised to a 91-68 victory over Brooklyn College at the Panzer Athletic Center on Thursday evening.
Senior forward
STEVEN BREEMAN led four MSU players in double figures with 17 points as the Red Hawks captured their season opener and their first win against Brooklyn College since 2006. The Bulldogs (0-2) lead the all-time series 5-2, with tonight's matchup the first between the teams since 2016.
DEVIN COOPER finished with 14 points while
AMARI MILLS added 10 along with three assists. Junior guard
KEYON PRYCE dished out seven helpers and grabbed five rebounds for Montclair State, which connected 13 times from behind the arc and committed just 10 turnovers in the contest. Twelve different players scored a point for MSU.
The Red Hawks built an early seven-point, 14-7.
FRANCISCO PAULINO scored on a layup with 14:13 left in the opening half. That lead would get to 27-17 with 7:20 remaining as Breeman connected from three-point range however, Brooklyn College went on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes and took a 32-31 lead on Zuric Henry's three-pointer. Cooper answered with a three at the other end, igniting a 12-0 half-ending run as Montclair led 43-32 at the break after
KALLEEM LAMBERT scored on a jumper in the paint.
In the second half, Montclair got the lead to 49-33 on a Breeman three-point two minutes into the new period. Montclair would keep its advantage in double-digits and extend it to a 64-46 with 13 minutes left as Breeman finished off a fast-break pass from Cooper. MSU would take its largest lead at 28 points on three occasions, the last coming with 7:17 to go on a layup from Breeman inside.
MSU shot 54 percent in the second half (19-of-35) and finished the game 33-for-68 from the field (49 percent). Noah shy led all players with 18 points and added eight rebounds. Jarid Garcia had 13, with Kayin Olajide totaling 11.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, November 13, hosting another Bulldogs team, DeSales University at 1:00 pm.
