Women's Basketball Rolls to First Victory in Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

Red Hawks Down PSU-Abington; Carter, Walsh Lead with 14 Points Each

York, PA – Junior NICKIE CARTER and senior ANNIE WALSH each scored 14 points as Montclair State jumped out to a 13-point lead after one quarter and rolled to a 90-30 victory over Penn State – Abington in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic as York College on Sunday afternoon.

JULIA SUTTON earned 10 points as the Red Hawks squared their record at 1-1 on the season.

MSU, which never trailed in the game, scored the first points of the contest as Carter connected on a jumper 20 seconds in. After the Nittany Lions (1-2) tied it up, the Red Hawks followed with a 10-2 run to build a 14-4 lead with Carter finishing off a fast break with 4:53 to play. Walsh capped the quarter for MSU with a three-pointer as Montclair State led 19-6 after the first period.

MEGAN DUFFY and Walsh scored five points in the second quarter as MSU outscored PSU-Abington 23-7. The Red Hawks forced 10 turnovers and allowed just nine shots. Carter netted four points and Sutton three helping Montclair to a 42-13 lead at the break.

KENDALL HODGES finished with eight points and five assists for MSU, which got six points apiece from Duffy, TRISHA PETERSON and freshman OLIVIA VERO. KELLY SMITH grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds with Peterson pulling down nine. Duffy, KELEYSHA PETIT-FRERE and SANIYA MYERS each had six rebounds as the Red Hawks outrebounded the Nittany Lions, 63-33, including 28 on the offensive glass.   

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, November 20 traveling to Hoboken, NJ to face in-state rival Stevens at 2:00 pm.
