Second Half Surge Leads Women's Basketball Past Albertus Magnus

New Haven, Conn. – The Montclair State women's basketball team outscored Albertus Magnus 41-30 over the final two quarters en route to a 77-67 victory Tuesday evening.

The Red Hawks (4-5) received a game-high 27 points from NICKIE CARTER, while Albertus Magnus (2-7) was paced 21 from Diamond White.

Montclair State raced out to an early 8-3 advantage, with Carter tallying five points during the run. The Falcons went on a 14-2 run to open up a five-point lead, holding the Red Hawks without a point for nearly five minutes. Montclair stopped the rally with MAHOGANY WORSLEY-WOOTEN layup before the hosts finished off the scoring with a triple with 26 to go to take a seven-point lead into the second.

The lead swelled to as much as eight in the second stanza, but Carter hit a layup and TRISHA PETERSON drained a three to trim the deficit to three midway through the period. Montclair converted four free throws to pull within one before Carter pushed MSU back in front with 35 ticks left in the period. The Falcons hit their final try with four seconds left to enter the half, clinging to a one-point lead.

The Red Hawks took the lead for good on a KELLY SMITH layup 17 seconds into the third. The layup kick-started an 8-3 run by the team. OLIVIA VERO contributed baskets on consecutive possessions midway through the period, and a Carter jumper stretched the lead to double-digits for the first time late in the quarter.

Albertus Magnus did not go down quietly, trimming the gap to four on free throws from Caitlyn Scott with 5:33 left in the fourth. The advantage shrunk to three before Carter and KENDALL HODGES pushed the lead back to seven with layups. The duo of Carter and Hodges combined to tally the final 17 points, including four free throws over the last two minutes to preserve the victory.

The Red Hawks out-rebounded Albertus 46-23, including 13 offensive rebounds. Carter added six rebounds to go with her 27 points. Peterson was one rebound shy of a double-double, adding 10 points. Hodges poured in 12 points while adding six assists and four boards.
