Men's Lacrosse Falls to Kean in Season Opener, 9-7

Brennan Scores Four Goals

Montclair, NJ – Junior attack Brady Moore scored three times as Kean University snapped a 13-year drought against Montclair State with a 9-7 victory at Sprague Field on Friday evening.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Francy stopped 14 shots and also scored a goal as the Cougars (2-0) jumped out to a five-goal halftime lead and held on for its first victory against the Red Hawks since 2008 Skyline Conference Championship Game, a span of 18 games.

Junior attack ROBERT BRENNAN scored four goals for Montclair State (0-1), which was playing its first contest since March 11 of last season.

Brennan gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead 39 seconds into the contest and put Montclair up 2-1 with 8:17 left finishing off a feed from TYLER MCCREERY. But the Cougars scored the next six goals, including the final four of the opening quarter. Connor Batjer and Kyle Ryder scored 1:55 apart to put Kean in front.

Francy then stunned Montclair off a clear attempt with 3:14 remaining. Looking to advance past midfield before a violation, Francy heaved the ball 55 yards that managed to find the back of the net making the score 4-2. Danny Bill finished off the first quarter for the Cougars with a goal and a Jonathan Duffy score to open the second widened the lead to 6-2.

Dante Magliano capped the Kean run with 9:23 left before Brennan's third of the half less than a minute later cut the lead to 7-3. Moore and Montclair's JOE COVINO traded goals with Moore netting his third with three seconds left as the Cougars went into halftime up 9-4.

MSU would shut out Kean over the final two quarters and closed the gap as Brennan scored the lone goal in the third with CHRISTIAN BOYLE tallying twice in the fourth, the latter a man-up score with 6:16 left pulling the Red Hawks within 9-7. The Red Hawks appeared to cut the deficit to a goal with 2:54 left as MATT DANCSECS scored off the right wing. However, it would not count as Montclair was whistled for a foul.

Connor Batjer finished with a goal and two assists with Kyle Ryder doing the same. Batjer, Matt Tanis and Matt Palmieri each forced two turnovers with Palmieri scooping up eight ground balls.

McCreery collected three assists and RYAN MCCOY (three ground balls) and WILSON SMITH (seven ground balls) caused three turnovers apiece. DARIO SIRNI was 10-of-12 on faceoffs and MATTHEW MCLAREN stopped 11 shots.

MSU is back in action on Sunday, March 14 as it hosts the defending national champion and fourth-ranked Cabrini at Noon. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.
