Second Half Rally Sends Women's Soccer Past William Paterson

Red Hawks Score Four Second Half Goals

Montclair, NJ: The Montclair State women's soccer team erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to storm back and knock off William Paterson University 4-1 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play Thursday.

Montclair (3-0-1, 3-0-1 NJAC) received a pair of goals from SOFIA AMBROSIO to remain unbeaten against the Pioneers (0-1-1, 0-1-1 NJAC) in the last 12 meetings between the Route 46 rivals.

The Red Hawks had the chances early, as AILEEN CAHILL's rip from outside the box in the third minute just missed the top corner of the goal. Two minutes later, Ambrosio nearly got the Red Hawks on the board, but her touch skipped past the lower part of the goal and went out for a goal-kick.

As time ticked away in the opening half, the play was predominantly focused in the midfield, as neither side got many good looks. In the 27th minute, MADDIE MUSICO had a header just inched wide of the post.

Despite controlling action, the Red Hawks found themselves trailing as William Paterson snapped the 0-0 tie in the 34th minute. Daniella LoBue evaded defenders on the sideline and threaded a pass to Isabel Fernandez. Fernandez got in behind the defense and scored into the lower part of the frame to give WPU a 1-0 advantage. The Red Hawks only took one additional shot over the final nine minutes, and the guests took the 1-0 edge into halftime.

The halftime break paid dividends early for Montclair State, as they needed just 1:39 to pull level. Senior CATHERINE CARNEVALE fired from long range, and her attempt was stopped by Erica Hickey. The rebound fell to the ground, and rookie LAUREN ERNST was there to tap in the carom to even things at one all.

The teams traded scoring chances midway through the stanza, with Hickey stopping Ernst in the 64th minute before senior PHOEBE BLEDSOE denied Michelle Wilson in the 65th. Montclair took the lead for good in the 70th minute. Sophomore PAIGE YOCUM passed over to JESSICA DESARNO, who lobbed a pass from just outside the corner flag. The cross was on point, as it found the back of the net for the sophomore's first collegiate goal.

Staked to a lead for the first time on the afternoon, the Red Hawks would end up playing a man-up for the last seven minutes. After seeing yellow in the first half, Fernandez was sent off with her second yellow of the day, and William Paterson was forced to play with 10.

Montclair would score twice in the final 5:30. DeSarno passed to freshman TARA LAMBERT just inside the box, and Lambert sent a low pass to Ambrosio, who did her part and beat the goalkeeper. Two and a half minutes later, Cahill raced down the near sideline and slipped a pass to Ambrosio. Ambrosio took a touch, got the goalkeeper out of the position, and scored far side to cap off the scoring.

DeSarno registered a goal and an assist as Ambrosio, Cahill, and junior EMILY DEGEYTER each had three shots. Bledsoe made one save for her third win of the season. Hickey stopped five shots for the Pioneers.

The Red Hawks close out the regular season Wednesday as they travel to Rutgers-Camden to take on the Scarlet Raptors.
