Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out perhaps the most unusual season in their history on Saturday with the final two sessions of their NJAC meet with The College of New Jersey and Kean University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool.
Competing against Kean in-venue and TCNJ virtually, the MSU women earned a split with a 212-107 victory against Kean while falling to the Lions, 219-129 to end their abbreviated season at 3-1. Meanwhile, the men fell to TCNJ, 203-120 closing out a 2-1 campaign.
Despite the interesting format of the meet, the Red Hawks made the most of the opportunity, setting seven new pool records over the two-day, championship-style event, including four on the final day. Added to that was a new Montclair State individual diving mark set before the competition took place on Friday as senior
IAN JOHNSON re-established his record in the one-meter event.
On Saturday, the women's team got off to a hot start, turning in a second-place time of 1:53.38 in the 200-medley relay, with senior
EMILY ROTHAMEL, sophomore
DANIELLE HOLMES, and rookies
LIDIA BOGUSLAWSKA and
MOLLY MOORE composed that quartet. Sophomore
CAMRYN VOGEL went second in the 400-IM in 4:55.25 while Vogel and Holmes went 3-4 in the 100-breaststroke. Boguslawska won the 200-freestyle in 1:58.86 as junior
TAYLOR WADDLETON was third in 2:02.11.
Rothamel won her first event of the morning session in the 100-backstroke, touching the wall in 1:01.53. She edged out sophomore
ERIN BARRETT, who was just .12 seconds behind her. The morning session was capped off with the 800-freestyle relay team of Waddleton, Rothamel, Moore, and Boguslawska winning in a Panzer Pool record time of 8:15.08.
On the men's side, freshman
EIKER JACOME and sophomore
TYLER DORSETT placed within .34 seconds of each other in the 200-free. Jacome was second in 52.35 while Dorsett was third in 52.69. Sophomore
SAMUEL GOLOVIN nabbed third in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.71, as
GREG KARBACK was second in the 100-back in 54.39.
Two pool records also fell on the men's side during the morning session, thanks to a pair of first-year Red Hawks.
SPENSER DUBOIS took second place in the 100-breaststroke in a record time of 58.03, before
RYAN KAPPES closed the session on a high note, setting a new standard in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:00.10 to close out the opening portion of the day.
The final session would be highlighted by Dubois, who added a second pool record to his weekend performance with a win in the 200 breaststroke. Dubois swam 2:08.13, breaking the mark of current Kean women's coach Chris Swenson.
Golovin finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:56.49) with Karback (1:57.99) and
SANTIAGO VANEGAS (49.03) claiming the same spots in the 200 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Golovin,
PAUL HOUSER, Karback, and
CHRISTIAN GILIO-MALABRE combined on a time of 3:05.56 for second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Rothamel placed second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.24 and Boguslawska swam 54.50 in the 100 freestyle to claim the No. 2 spot in the event results.
