Montclair, NJ – Freshman
AILEEN CAHILL's 26th-minute goal proved to be the difference as second-seeded Montclair State blanked third-seeded Stockton in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Semifinals Saturday.
The Red Hawks (4-0-2), who advanced to their second straight NJAC Championship Game, will meet either fifth-seeded Ramapo or top-seeded Rutgers-Camden Wednesday evening.
Montclair came out firing, putting three shots on target within the first nine minutes of the game. Goalkeeper Kylee Sullivan denied all three shots. Senior goalkeeper
PHOEBE BLEDSOE was tested in the 16th minute, but she sopped Susan Porambo, who tried to sneak a low shot in.
Freshman
LAUREN ERNST entered in the 22nd minute and paid dividends four minutes later. Ernst passed to Cahill, who deposited the ball in the back of the goal for her second tally of the season. Staked to the lead, Bledsoe came up with a pair of saves in the 33rd and 34th minutes to send Montclair into halftime, leading 1-0.
The Red Hawks doubled Stockton in shots with an 8-4 margin at the break, while Bledsoe and Sullivan notched three saves.
SOFIA AMBROSIO and Cahill were turned away by Sullivan in the 52nd minute before Sullivan saved Cahill's additional attempt in the 64th minute. As time ticked away, the Ospreys were awarded a corner kick in the 76th minute. Off the attempt, Carlie Vetrini saw her shot sail high. The Red Hawks looked to double their lead late, as Sullivan stopped
TARA LAMBERT's 87th minute try. Pressing for a goal, the Ospreys had one final chance as Allie Magas put a shot on goal in the 88th minute. Bledsoe was right there, and the Red Hawks ran out the clock to punch their ticket to the title game.
Cahill led all participants with five shots, while Bledsoe made five to earn the victory. Sullivan kept the Ospreys in the game, parrying away nine Red Hawk shot attempts.
