Men's Soccer Returns to NJAC Championship with 3-1 Win Over Rutgers-Camden

Koroman Nets Game-Winner in 66th Minute

Montclair, NJ – The top-seeded Montclair State men's soccer team punched its ticket to the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship with a 3-1 win over fifth-seeded Rutgers-Camden Saturday.

STEFAN KOROMAN and GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO netted second-half goals for the Red Hawks (5-0-0), who will face third-seeded Ramapo College at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field Wednesday. Time is to be determined.

The Red Hawks made the first shot of the afternoon count, as they grabbed the key first goal 11 minutes in. Off a foul, OSBIN MENDEZ sent in a free-kick that glanced off a defender. DANIEL RODRIGUEZ went to the back post and tapped the ball in for his first goal of the season and put MSU up 1-0. Junior SHANE KEENAN made his first stop of the afternoon in the 26th minute, but the Scarlet Raptors started to apply the pressure.

The Red Hawks surrendered their first goal of the year in the 28th minute. Parker Solowey threaded the needle on a through ball, and Kaito Kitazawa did the rest, ripping a shot that eluded Keenan to pull the guests even at one. Juan Bahena denied a pair of Montclair scoring attempts late in the half, and the two sides entered halftime tied.

The two units battled for possession to begin the half, with neither team putting a shot on goal for nearly 20 minutes. The Red Hawks got a bit of luck, as JANBI KAGHADO blocked a long clearing pass. Kaghado got in behind the defense and slid a low pass to Koroman. Koroman settled the pass and shot low, beating Bahena for his first goal of the year.

Staked to the lead, Mendez had a chance to double the lead in the 73rd minute, but his shot was stopped. The rebound came to JAKE STUMP, but his header just glanced wide of the post. As both teams pressed on, the Red Hawks found their insurance marker in the 84th minute. Off a Mendez corner, Kaghado volleyed the ball to Altamirano, who one-touched the ball into the goal for his first tally of the year. Keenan preserved the win with one more late save in the 89th minute, and the Red Hawks moved onto the finals.

Altamirano, Koroman, MARVIN CADENA, and ANTHONY PELAEZ recorded two shots, as Keenan made three saves. Bahena made four stops for Camden, who received two shots from Kitazawa, Christian McCartney, Skyler Diggs, and Prince Boafo.
