Lilien Matches School-Record in Women's Lacrosse Historic Win

Goalkeeper Made 25 Saves; Red Hawks Defeat TCNJ for First Time

Montclair, NJ – Senior goalkeeper ALLYN LILIEN matched the school record with 25 saves as the Montclair State women's lacrosse team knocked off No. 10 The College of New Jersey 10-9, the first win over the Lions in program history.

The Red Hawks (2-0, 1-0 NJAC), snapped a 22-game skid against the Lions (2-2, 0-1 NJAC). Lilien's 25 saves matched Nilsa Ramirez's 25 save performance against Rutgers on April 2, 1981.

Junior AMBER GONZALEZ got the Red Hawks on the board just 2:26 into the contest before the Lions answered back 1:32 later. Montclair State netted the next two markers, but Lilien kept TCNJ off the board for nearly seven minutes. The goalkeeper denied a pair of free-position attempts before Erin Jaffe snapped the scoreless streak at the 17:11 mark.

MORGAN CONNON scored an unassisted tally with just under eight minutes to go in the opening period, but TCNJ ended the half with the final three goals to take a 5-4 edge into halftime. Lilien was pressed into making 11 first-half stops, as TCNJ held a 19-9 advantage in the shot department.

TRISTIN KONEN pulled the Red Hawks even at five before Gonzalez capped off her hat-trick just 30 seconds later. The two goals in a 30-second span were aided by a crucial draw control victory by BRITTANY COSTIGAN. The Lions once again found the back of the net with 23 minutes to go, yet Gonzalez answered back off a free-position try to push MSU in front 7-6.

That tally proved to be huge as it allowed MSU to go on a 3-0 spurt, with senior MEGAN MAHLSTADT and Costigan contributing goals to the rally. Jaffe and Costigan traded markers before Jaffe and Emily Ingram scored within a 31-second span. Lilien denied Jaffe with 2:42 left and MSU successfully cleared the ball. Just after crossing the 30, a pass went awry and TCNJ regained possession. The MSU defense was good enough to force one final turnover and ran the clock out to seal the victory.

Gonzalez finished with a career-high four goals, as Konen and Costigan each tallied a pair. MEGHAN GORMAN and Gonzalez each forced two turnovers, with Lilien adding four ground balls. Jaffe tallied four goals and an assist while taking 14 shots.

The Red Hawks hit the road on Tuesday as they take on Kean in NJAC action at 4 pm.
