Men's Lacrosse Knocked Off by Stockton in CSAC Opener

McCreery Posts Four Goals, Three Assists

Montclair, NJ – Midfielder Joey Tiernan scored five times and assisted on six other goals as Stockton raced past Montclair State, 21-12 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

Dante Poli added three goals and four assists as the Ospreys (1-1) bounced back from their season-opening loss to fourth-ranked Salisbury to win the rematch of the 2019 CSAC Championship contest.

TYLER MCCREERY collected four goals and three assists for the Red Hawks, who fell back to the .500 mark at 3-3 while having their three-game winning streak snapped.

Luv Swedlund, Tiernan and Matt Honchalk each scored in a three-goal run as Stockton just out to a 4-1 lead nine minutes into the game. McCreery set up CHRISTIAN BOYLE and ROBERT BRENNAN 39 seconds part cutting the lead back to 4-3, however, goals from Alex Leming, Peter Burke and Tiernan in the final three minutes helped give the Ospreys a 7-3 advantage after one.

Stockton outscored MSU 6-2 in the second and recorded the first three, the last by Swedlund with 9:44 left to increase the lead to 10-3. After MATT DANCSECS ended the six-goal run midway through, Tiernan scored twice after a Swedlund goal putting the Ospreys in front by nine. McCreery's goal with 27 seconds left made the score 13-5 Stockton at the break.

Poli and Eric Ellis each scored to begin the third extending the Osprey lead to 15-5. After MSU trimmed that back with two goals, Poli set up Tiernan for a goal ahead of the quarter horn giving Stockton a 16-7 lead going into the fourth. The Ospreys scored four of the first five goal in the final period, the last by Poli for a 20-8 advantage. Montclair closed the gap with a four-goal run which was bookended by McCreery goals before Eric D'Arminio closed out the scoring for Stockton with 11 seconds to play.

Swedlund finished with four goals, assist and four ground balls with Justin Werder, Logan Holleritter and Tyler Horvath also recording four ground balls apiece. Werder, Holleritter, Poli and Brendan Scanlon forced two turnover each with goalkeepers Eric Lindskog and Colin Bernstein stopping 12 and three shots, respectively.

KYLE MATTHEWS was 22-of-32 with nine ground balls for the Red Hawks with WILSON SMITH adding seven along with three caused turnovers. JACK GRECO forced four along with seven ground balls. TOM POLLOCK made 10 saves.

The Red Hawks are off until Saturday, April 10 when it hosts Keystone College in a CSAC matchup at Sprague Field beginning at Noon.
