Glassboro, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team dropped a doubleheader against No. 11 Rowan University to close out the regular season Saturday.
The Red Hawks (19-8, 11-7 NJAC) will host the Quarterfinals of the NJAC Tournament beginning next Friday at noon against an opponent to be determined. The Profs (19-3, 17-1) won 7-4 in the opener before winning 14-1 in the finale.
The Profs wasted little time, scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning of game one. Lefty
PATRICK CUCCURULLO settled in after retiring eight of the next nine hitters to keep Rowan off the scoreboard.
The Red Hawks battled back, tallying four runs in the fifth.
ERIC HAVNER and
HAYDEN REYES led off with singles before advancing up a base on a sacrifice bunt by
JOE NORTON. After
MILES FEASTER reached on an error to plate Havner,
PETER COSENTINO and
ANDREW OLLWERTHER walked to bring in another run. Freshman
MICHAEL MURPHY reached out on a fielder's choice coupled with a fielding error that allowed an additional two runs to score.
Rowan tallied a one-out single in the fifth, but the runner was erased via a 6-4-3 double play. Montclair had the tying run at the second with one out in the sixth, but Christian Bascunan came on and retired the next two hitters to end the frame. Cosentino led off the seventh with a double but was left stranded after a double-play canceled out a runner. Rowan tacked on two runs in the seventh, and the Red Hawks were unable to get any closer.
Feaster, Havner, and Reyes collected two hits, as Cuccurullo fanned nine in 6 2/3 innings of work.
ALEC BENZINGER added three strikeouts in relief.
The Red Hawks put the first two men on base in game two but were stranded after the next three batters were sent back. Rowan scored once in the first and broke the game open with a three-run double by Chris Curcio in the second frame. The Profs tallied at least one run in the first seven innings, including back-to-back home runs by Hunter Wroniuk and Ryan Mostrangeli.
The Red Hawks ended the scoreless streak with a single run in the seventh. Pinch-hitting for Reyes,
REECE MALEK lofted a sacrifice fly to center, which scored
SAM ANGELO. Angelo had left off with a walk and moved to third on singles by
MARCO MONTEIRO and
JASON MOORE.
JUSTIN KOSINSKI made the season debut, going 2/3 of an inning with a strikeout.
Norton had two hits from his leadoff position, while
JACK HAVESON and
JUSTIN SILVA recorded a pair of strikeouts.
