No. 8 Men's Soccer Rolls Past Centenary in Season Opener

Crawford Scores Once, Two Assists as Red Hawks Wn, 6-1

Montclair, NJ - Junior forward JOSIAH CRAWFORD scored once and added two assists as No. 8 Montclair State scored five times in the second half and rolled to a 6-1 victory over Centenary University at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman midfielder AMER LUKOVIC added a goal and assist as the Red Hawks (1-0) broke open the game, including three scores in the first 11 minutes of the second half.

Mahir Yilmaz connected on a goal for the Cyclones (0-1), who dropped to 0-9 against their in-state rival.

After missing a few chances early, Montclair State broke through in the 26th minute converting a corner kick chance. Crawford served the ball across the goal to the opposite side to freshman REED KARSEN, who headed in the feed for the first goal of the game and the season for MSU.

The Red Hawks took the one-goal lead into the break and quickly added to it 49 seconds into the second half as OWEN MURPHY connected on a penalty kick making the score 2-0. Crawford netted a goal of his own less than four minutes later finishing off a feed from Lukovic, who made it 4-0 in the 57th minute.

A MARVIN CADENA goal pushed the lead to 5-0 in the 66th minute before Yilmz scored on a penalty kick six minutes later. BRENT LLEWELLYN got the final goal of the contest with 5:05 left sending a PK into the back of the net.

The Red Hawks outshot Centenary, 22-5. SHANE KEENAN stopped three shots for MSU while Andrew Tarakzikis (10 saves) and Paul LiTrenta combined for 11 stops for the Cyclones.  

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 4 as it travels to Chestertown, MD for the Athey Cup. MSU faces DeSales University on Saturday at 1:00 pm before meeting host Washington College on Sunday, September 5 at 4:00 pm.
