Chestertown, MD – The No. 8 Montclair State men's soccer team picked up its second straight victory, blanking DeSales University 2-0 on the first day of the Athey Cup Saturday afternoon.
Montclair State, who moved to 2-0, outshot DeSales 22-4 on the afternoon. DeSales dropped to 0-1 on the season, as their opener against Eastern was canceled due to the storm Wednesday.
The Red Hawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, putting the first goal up just 3:35 into the game. After a throw-in, rookie
AMER LUKOVIC received the ball and dribbled around a Bulldog defender. Just before reaching the end line, Lukovic slid a pass across the box to fellow freshman
IAN CHESNEY. Chesney, who had pushed up on a set-piece, took the pass at the far post and tapped it in for his first collegiate tally.
Neither side recorded a shot over the next 19 minutes before Montclair State's
JOSIAH CRAWFORD had his saved by DeSales' Nathan Hatzfield. The Red Hawks doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. Lukovic had his initial shot blocked, but the ball was bobbled by Hatzfield. The carom ended up back on the foot of Lukovic, who fired into the goal for his second marker of the season.
Montclair State nearly added a third goal just 53 seconds into the second period, but Crawford's try was cleared off the line by the backline of DeSales. The Red Hawks continued to apply pressure, as chances by junior
JANBI KAGHADO and Lukovic were denied by Hatzfield.
The Bulldogs pushed numbers and looked to get on the board late. Both DimejiOyinkolade and Kade Adomanis attempted shots in the 90th minute, but goalkeeper
ANDRES LEZME denied both tries to keep the shutout intact.
Lukovic led the team with five shots, as Crawford and
CHRISTIAN BERNAL each fired four. Lezme made two stops to earn his first collegiate victory, while Hatzfield stopped 13 shots in the setback.
The Red Hawks close out the Athey Cup tomorrow afternoon as they face host Washington College at 4 pm.
