Montclair, NJ – SAMANTHA GABRIELE and CHISOM ONYEWUENYI scored seven minutes apart inside 20 minutes remaining in the second half as Montclair State pulled away from Ursinus College, 3-1 at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday afternoon.
ZOE STECK added a goal for the Red Hawks, who bounced back from their one-goal loss on Wednesday at Vassar to improve to 3-1 on the year. It was also Montclair's third win over the Bears in as many meetings. The two met for the first time since a 1-0 win by the Red Hawks on a goal by CATHERINE CARNEVALE with one second left in double overtime in 2019.
Kelly Gardus scored for the Bears, who fell to 1-2-1 on the season.
The Red Hawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute as Steck recorded her second goal of the season with AILEEN CAHILL and JESSICA DESARNO picking up assists on the play. Meanwhile, the Montclair State defense was on lockdown allowing just one shot in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Bears got their first shot in the 52nd minute as Makayla Heisler fired a shot Montclair keeper LINDSAY FREEWALT stopped. Freewalt would come up with another at the 70:22 mark and the Red Hawks turned that into their second goal. EMILY DEGEYTER found Gabriele 71 seconds later making the score 2-0.
Onyewuenyi capped the scoring at 78:07 with her first of the season, an unassisted tally, and her first since last spring's NJAC Championship Game when MSU edged Rutgers-Camden, 1-0.
Gardus broke the shutout bid for the Red Hawks with 29 seconds left. Izzy Allocco recorded the assist.
Freewalt finished with three saves as she picked up her first victory of the season. Mandy Carideo made two for the Bears, who were outshot 11-6 in the contest.
MSU returns to action on Wednesday, September 15 with a non-conference road contest at DeSales University beginning at 4:00 pm.
