Montclair, NJ – Senior
ZOE STECK scored 53 seconds into overtime as Montclair State slipped past Rutgers-Camden, 1-0 in the NJAC opener for both teams on Saturday at MSU Soccer Park.
PAIGE YOCUM collected the assist as the Red Hawks (4-2, 1-0 NJAC) broke the hearts of the Scarlet Raptors for the second time in five months. Last April, MSU defeated Rutgers-Camden, 1-0 in Camden to claim the conference championship. Montclair improved to 23-0-3 all-time versus the Raptors (1-4, 0-1 NJAC).
Steck's goal ended a dominant performance by the Red Hawks, who held Rutgers-Camden t just one shot in the game and none over the final 54 minutes. Meanwhile the Raptors were able to keep the match scoreless thanks to keeper Chloe Beasley, who made seven saves in the contest, including five in the first half.
Beasley denied
LAUREN ERNST and Steck attempts in the first 15 minutes and stopped a Steck shot in the 30
th minute. She made another save on a shot by Nikki Danz early in the second half and the Camden goalkeeper kept an Emily DeGetyer attempt out of the net with 12:14 left in regulation.
In the extra period, which lasted just 53 seconds, Yocum dropped a perfect ball to Steck, who knocked in her fourth goal of the year for the game winner.
Goalkeepers
LINDSAY FREEWALT and
HALEY MARTIN combined on the shutout, Montclair's second of the season.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, September 21 with a road contest on Long Island. MSU visits Farmingdale State at 4:00 pm as the two meet for the first time since 2009.
