Women's Soccer Blanks NJCU 4-0 in NJAC Action

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State women's soccer team scored twice in each half to top New Jersey City University 4-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Saturday.

The Red Hawks (6-2-0, 2-0-0 NJAC) held a 21-1 edge in shots over NJCU (2-4-2, 0-2-0) and are outshooting their NJAC opponents 39-2 over the first two games.

Montclair State wasted little time scoring, getting on the board in the third minute. Rookie EMMI DENOVELLIS sent in a corner kick, and junior Sofia headed it into the back of the net for her first goal of the year. The Red Hawks nearly doubled the lead eight minutes later, as graduate student ZOE STECK had two shots. The first glanced off the crossbar before the goalkeeper smothered the second.

The Red Hawks applied pressure, holding NJCU to no shots in the first half, and the team added a second goal with 8:19 left before halftime. PAIGE YOCUM delivered a crisp pass to freshman RENEE ROCHA, and the rookie rifled a shot and in for her first collegiate tally. Montclair entered halftime with an 8-0 lead in shots and took both corner kicks in the period.

The Gothic Knights' Angie Paz stopped SAMANTHA GABRIELE in the 57th minute, yet Montclair forged on and added to their advantage three minutes later. This time it was Steck who converted the chance for her fifth marker of the season. Montclair finished off the scoring in the 63rd minute. After a foul, MACKENZIE CANGRO delivered a long free-kick that landed in the box right in front of the goal-line. CHISOM ONYEWUENYI was there to capitalize and poke the ball through for the final tally of the game.

HALEY MARTIN and MADISON WINFIELD combined on the shutout, with Winfield making the lone save. Steck and Rocha combined for nine shots, while Ambrosio and DeNovellis added two each. Cidney Lee-Sam and Paz combined for five saves in goal for NJCU.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday as they head to Kean University for an NJAC matchup at 7:30 pm.
