Montclair, NJ – The No. 15 Montclair State men's soccer team scored three times in the second half to upend Kean University 3-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play Wednesday.
JOSIAH CRAWFORD scored twice in a 1:26 span for the Red Hawks (9-1-1, 3-0-0 NJAC), who outshot Kean (6-2-1, 2-1-0 NJAC) 13-8 on the night.
A defensive first half featured just five combined shots between the two teams. Montclair had a good chance 9:11 into the game, as they appeared to have scored off a corner kick but were whistled for a foul instead. In the period, the Red Hawks had the lone shot on goal, with
IAN CHESNEY's chance in the 18th minute stopped by the Cougars' Dominic Ridge.
The Red Hawks opened the scoring 1:33 into the second half, with rookie
AMER LUKOVIC winning the ball out of a scrum at the top of the 18-yard box. The ball ended up at the feet of
RYAN CATALANO, who sent a long cross to the right flank. Crawford corralled the pass, moved into the box, and fired a strike past Ridge to give MSU the 1-0 edge.
Just 1:26 later, it was Crawford again who helped the Red Hawks double the lead. Off a poor clearance by the Cougars, the junior took the mishit and fired a one-touch shot past the keeper for his second marker of the night. Montclair kept the pressure up, but Ridge kept the Cougars in the game with saves on
JANBI KAGHADO and Lukovic.
Kean had a trio of corner kicks midway through the frame but were unable to convert. Ridge took down freshman
REED KARSEN in the box, and Karsen stepped up to the penalty spot and drilled the kick, putting MSU up 3-0. Kean nearly broke through in the 76th and 78th minutes, but one shot hit the crossbar while
SHANE KEENAN snared the other.
Crawford and Karsen each recorded three shots in the win, while Matt O'Shea had two for Kean.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday to head to Ewing, NJ to face The College of New Jersey at 6 pm.
