Women's Soccer Blanks Cabrini in Season-Opener, 3-0

Ernst, Cahill, Campbell Net Goals in Victory

Montclair, NJ - The Montclair State women's soccer team limited Cabrini to just two shots, and none on target as the Red Hawks downed the Cavaliers in the season opener for both teams Friday.

The Red Hawks held an 18-2 advantage in the shot department and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Cavaliers took the night's first shot, but the attempt sailed high just 1:01 into the contest. Despite the big shot disparity in the match, Montclair State attempted just two in the first 28 minutes of play. After making a series of changes, the Red Hawks broke through in the 29th minute. Graduate student ZOE STECK moved down the left-wing and slid a low cross into the box. It eluded SOFIA AMBROSIO, but sophomore LAUREN ERNST was there to tap it in for the first marker of the season.

The Red Hawks continued to apply pressure and pepper goalkeeper Ashley Tutzauer with shots but could not breakthrough. With time ticking down in the opening half, senior LAURA NOSEWORTHY sent a long ball into the box. Both sides had players down on the turf, but sophomore AILEEN CAHILL corralled the ball and fired into the goal, giving MSU a 2-0 lead with 24 seconds left in the first period.

Montclair State tacked one on an additional tally in the 73rd minute. After being awarded a corner, rookie EMMI DENOVELLIS served the ball in, and junior KIMBERLY CAMPBELL headed it in past Tutzauer, giving MSU the 3-0 lead. Montclair seemed poised to add a fourth marker in the 75th minute, but a try off a corner by sophomore SAMANTHA GABRIELE was blocked, and the rebound by CHISOM ONYEWUENYI was cleared off the line. The Red Hawks' staunch backline held the Cavaliers to no shots over the final 37:07 to claim the 3-0 victory.

Steck, Onyewuenyi, Cahill, Ernst, and rookie NIKI DANZ fired two shots in the victory. Tutzauer made nine saves in the setback for the Cavaliers.

The Red Hawks return home on Sunday as they host Marywood University a 1 pm at MSU Soccer Park.
