Cahill's Late Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Past Marywood, 2-1

Sophomore Nets Two as MSU Wins 2nd Straight

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore midfielder AILEEN CAHILL scored both goals, including the go-ahead goal with 3:52 remaining as Montclair State edged Marywood University, 2-1 at MSU Soccer Park on Sunday afternoon.

CHISOM ONYEWUENYI had an assist as the Red Hawks (2-0) won their second straight and took the first meeting between the teams.

Riley Mulherin scored once for the Pacers (1-1), who got four saves from keeper Victoria Talarico.

Cahill gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with her second goal of the season. The sophomore moved into box on the right side and fought past several defenders before flipping a rolling right-foot shot inside the opposite post for the game's first game.

Montclair held the Pacers to just two shots in the first half and took the one-goal lead into the locker room. In the second half, Marywood picked up the pace and got a chance to tie it as Victoria Tzitzis fired an attempt in the 63rd minute stopped by HALEY MARTIN.

Talarico made two saves to keep the game close and the Pacers turned those solid stops into offense. Tzitzisco collected a ball down the left sideline and maneuvered below the box. She served a ball back across within eight yards to a waiting Mulherin, who flicked a shot inside the far post, tying the match at 1-1 with 22:48 remaining.

Talarico made a save against Onyewuenyi in the 85th minute, which led to back-to-back corner kicks for Montclair State. The Red Hawks came up empty on the first attempt, however, it would take advantage of the second. Taking the kick from the left side, Onyewuenyi served the ball to the near post where a driving Cahill headed into the net for her second goal and third of the young season.

Martin had two saves to earn her second victory of the season.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, September 8 with their first road contest of the year. MSU will be in Poughkeepsie, NY taking on Vassar College at 4:00 pm.
