Poughkeepsie, NY – Vassar College tallied a late goal to edge the Montclair State women's soccer team 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.
ZOE STECK tallied the lone goal for the Red Hawks, who suffered their first defeat of the season. Vasser improves to 2-0 on the year.
Both teams had early chances off corner kicks, with juniors
SOFIA AMBROSIO and
JESSICA DESARNO notching attempts off the set-piece opportunities. In the 24th minute,
HALEY MARTIN denied Noelle Namba off the corner try, keeping the score deadlocked at zero. The two sides entered halftime tied at zero, with the goalkeepers combining for five saves.
Vassar finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Emily Foote found Sydney McDonald, and McDonald beat Martin to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Just 2:41 later, the Red Hawks equalized. After a foul, rookie
EMMI DENOVELLIS sent a free-kick into the box, where Steck could get a head on it and score for her first marker of the year.
After the Red Hawks had a shot sail wide in the 79th minute, the Brewers delivered the final marker in the 84th minute. This time it was Sara Rubinelli who beat Martin to give Vassar the critical 2-1 edge. MSU could not find the tying goal to force overtime, and the Brewers' defense clamped down to hold Montclair without a shot for the rest of the afternoon.
Martin made four saves in the setback, while Steck and
AILEEN CAHILL led the team with two shots each. Like Martin, Teresa Zimmer made four saves for the host Brewers.
The Red Hawks return home Saturday as they host Ursinus College at 3 pm.
