Montclair, NJ – Freshman forward Keirra Ettere scored twice, while Hanna Corrigan added another as Cortland knocked off Montclair State, 3-1 at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Megan McGuinness stopped eight shots as the Red Dragons improved to 2-0 on the season while snapping a seven-game losing streak against MSU. Cortland, which trails in the all-time series, 7-5, won for the first time since 2009 when it recorded an identical victory in Upstate New York.
Sophomore
CARLIE VAN TASSEL had a goal for the Red Hawks, who were playing in their season opener after the initial one versus New Paltz on Wednesday was canceled.
Scoreless after the first period, the Red Hawks got on the board 55 seconds into second on Van Tassel's first goal of the season.
LINSEY CHAMPA sent a ball down low to Van Tassel, who pulled off a turnaround shot inside the right post for the 1-0 lead.
The lead however lasted just 68 seconds as Ettere collected the first of her two goals. Collecting a loose ball inside the circle, the first-year Red Dragon flipped a shot that deflected off the stick of MSU keeper
LAUREN PICKUL. However, the ricochet remained on target toward the cage and slowly trickled in knotting the contest at 1-1 with 12:57 to go before halftime.
The stalemate carried into the second half when Cortland untied the contest. Hanna Corrigan took away a Red Hawk in the circle and drove in along the left sideline, flicking a shot by Pickul on the left posted giving the Red Dragons a 2-1 advantage.
MSU nearly tied the game two minutes later as Van Tassel got off a close-range shot that appeared headed into the right corner of the cage. However, Alaine Genter made a sweeping clear at the last moment, keeping Cortland in front. The Red Dragons then fought off several penalty corner opportunities by the Red Hawks with McGuinness making a pair of saves during that timeframe.
Ettere added an insurance goal with 7:29 left in the fourth, her fifth of the season, on a shot from the top of the circle inside the left post.
Pickul finished with seven saves for Montclair, which outshot Cortland 16-15. The Red Hawks also out-cornered the Red Dragons, 19-7.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, September 8 when it travels down the Route 3 corridor to face Stevens in Hoboken at 7:00 pm.
