Bartnik Nets First Collegiate Goal as No. 20/23 Men's Soccer Takes Down Ramapo

Montclair, NJ – The No. 20/23 Montclair State men's soccer team notched a 5-2 victory over Ramapo in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Saturday.

ANTHONY VIOLA, JOSIAH CRAWFORD, and Jacob Barntik tallied goals, while IAN CHESNEY added a pair for Montclair State (8-1-3, 3-0-0 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both sides had chances early, but the Red Hawks could break through in the 22nd minute. Crawford slipped a pass to Viola, who fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box for his second marker of the season.
  • Osbin Mendez had a pair of shots in the opening 45 minutes denied by BORIS DEL VALLE, while Gavin Mullin's high try was snuffed out by the senior goalkeeper late in the period.
  • Mendez was whistled for a foul in the box with 54 seconds to go, and Chesney stepped up to the penalty spot. The sophomore ripped a high shot into the back of the goal for his fourth marker of the season, sending MSU into halftime up 2-0.
  • The Roadrunners (1-6-1, 1-2-0 NJAC) cut the lead in half nearly 11 minutes into the second period. Mendez served in a free-kick, and Damian Zurawaski headed into the set-piece try for his first goal of the season.
  • Viola nearly bagged a brace in the 61st minute, but his shot was denied by Matthew Wilcox, and went out for a corner. JANBI KAGHADO almost padded the lead in the 64th minute as a Ramapo defender cleared his attempt off the line.
  • Montclair State restored the two-goal advantage in the 82nd minute, with Bartnik firing a long-distance that eluded Wilcox for a goal. Crawford made it 4-1 with an unassisted tally at the 85:09 mark.
  • 49 seconds after Crawford, Mendez scored off a low free-kick, which Del Valle couldn't reach, making it 4-2 in favor of Montclair. Chesney closed the game with a goal, scoring on a free-kick of his own. The sophomore defender used a quick restart to his advantage as the Ramapo defense could not get set.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • After playing in 20 games last season and nine this year, Bartnik registered his first collegiate goal, which held up as the game-winner.
