Field Hockey Edges Ramapo 2-1 in NJAC Opener

Mahwah, NJ – KYLIE COMPTON and CARLIE VAN TASSEL netted first-quarter goals as the Montclair State field hockey team picked up a 2-1 victory in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither side mustered a shot over the first 9:18 before Montclair (6-4, 1-0 NJAC) scored on their first try. GAB MAISTO inserted a corner to LINDSEY BICHER, and the senior fired a shot that Van Tassel tipped in for her fifth marker of the year.
  • After the Red Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke, Compton stepped up and beat the goalkeeper for her first marker of the season.
  • After not recording a shot in the first period, Ramapo (7-3, 0-1 NJAC) battled back and outshot Montclair 5-0 in the second stanza. The hosts trimmed the deficit in half in the 23rd minute, with Victoria Chavez netting a goal.
  • Roadrunner goalkeeper Michelle Kukan made a pair of saves in the third frame to keep it a one-score affair, setting the stage for a tough fourth quarter.
  • Red Hawks goalkeeper LAUREN PICKUL fended off three chances early in the final period before denying Chavez and Emily Riccardi in the 57th minute. Ramapo pulled their goalkeeper with 1:26 to go but could not muster a shot with an extra attacker.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Montclair moved to 18-1 all-time against Ramapo.
  • Pickul made seven saves, including the 200th of her career. She becomes the 14th goalkeeper in program history to eclipse the 200-save plateau.
  • Van Tassel led the Red Hawks with three shots, including two on goal.
