Football Drops NJAC Opener to Salisbury

Salisbury, Md. – The Montclair State football team fell to Salisbury 30-7 in their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first, the Sea Gulls (4-1, 1-0 NJAC) went 48 yards in six plays to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Diego Mendez linked up with Ja'Vaughn Burton for a 21-yard touchdown to give the host the lead.
  • The Red Hawks (2-3, 0-1 NJAC) began to drive down the field midway through the second quarter, but quarterback MASON MURDOCK was intercepted at the Salisbury eight-yard line by Caleb Brubaker. Brubaker returned the ball 44 yards to set the hosts up in MSU territory. However, the Red Hawks did not surrender a point on that drive, as Kollin Samaha's field goal was no good.
  • Montclair went three-and-out on their first possession in the third, and defense limited Salisbury to a field goal, putting SU up 10-0. On the ensuing possession, Brubaker picked up Murdock for a second time, taking this one back 79 yards for a touchdown.
  • Taking advantage of a blocked punt, Salisbury needed three plays to build a 23-0 lead, with Dario Belizaire punching in a 10-yard touchdown run.
  • The Red Hawks got their first takeaway of the day, with OMARIE WILMORE recovering a fumble at the Montclair State 19-yard line. Montclair State gave the ball back on the next play, with Frank Giannetti recovering a Murdock fumble after he was sacked.
  • Montclair State put their first points up with 6:42 to go, as JAKE COLON forced a fumble at the Salisbury 21. BRENNAN RAY scooped it up and returned it 21 yards for the score.
  • The Sea Gulls capped off the scoring as Hunter Hruz tallied a four-yard rushing score with 1:38 left.
