Football Drops Heartbreaker To Kean

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State football team dropped a 23-22 heartbreaker to Kean University Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (2-4, 0-2 NJAC) drew first blood in the first quarter. Kean (2-4, 1-1 NJAC) was forced into a 4th and 10 from their own 39, and Nick Firth lined up to punt. Firth's punt was blocked by RYAN VISALLI, who scooped it up at the Kean 30 and went the rest of the way for the touchdown.
  • After forcing a three-and-out, the Red Hawks padded their lead thanks to a 28-yard field goal from MICHAEL FITZPATRICK. The Red Hawks had moved down the field thanks to a big 44-yard gain from MASON MURDOCK to ERIC COWAN but the drive stalled in the red zone.
  • Montclair forced another Cougar punt and needed just two plays to extend the lead. Murdock linked up with Cowan for a 77-yard touchdown, and the Red Hawks led 16-0 after the extra point hit the upright.
  • The Cougars cut into the lead with about five minutes before halftime, going 78 yards in 10 plays that ate up 4:35. Quarterback Robbie Nunguesser kept the ball and rumbled in five yards out. Kean went for two, but SHERROD COOPER intercepted Nunguesser's pass in the endzone.
  • Montclair State looked poised to add points right before halftime, but Fitzpatrick missed a 32-yard field goal, and the team went into the break up 16-6.
  • Kean forced a punt on the opening drive of the third, and the punt was blocked by Terry Murphy and recovered by Christian La Rosa at the 27-yard line. Logan Matthews converted a 35-yard field goal to trim the gap to 16-9.
  • The sides traded before MSU tallied another touchdown late in the third quarter. Taking over at their own 42, Murdock completed two passes to MAKAI MICKENS before hitting Cowan down the sideline. Cowan maneuvered down the sideline and went for a 43-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 13.
  • With 8:59 left, Kean went 66 yards in four plays as Nunguesser ran for his second touchdown of the day. The Cougars forced a three-and-out and took over on their own 44 with 5:23 to go. They went 56 yards in nine, taking 4:38 off the clock before Nunguesser found Dazzy Iannuzzio for a two-yard touchdown.
  • Montclair got the ball back at their own 15-yard line with 37 seconds and got to the 40 on a 13-yard scramble from Murdock. Murdock was sacked by Meir Pittman on the next play with three seconds to go, giving Montclair one final play. Murdock heaved a pass up, and Javohn Arrington picked it off at the 30-yard line, giving Kean the win.
