Last Second Field Goal Sends TCNJ Past Football

Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State football team fell on a last-second field goal 18-15 to The College of New Jersey Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Lions (2-3, 1-1 NJAC) broke through midway through the second quarter. The Red Hawks (2-5, 0-3 NJAC) drove to the TCNJ 33 before Jack Young intercepted MASON MURDOCK. Young returned the ball 61 yards to the 12 before an unsportsmanlike conduct call placed the ball at six. The Lions needed one play before Trevor Bopp hit Malin Jasinski for a touchdown.
  • The Red Hawks began the next drive in Lions territory after a 43-yard kick return from DAN RAMOS, but the drive stalled at the TCNJ 10. The Red Hawks faked a field goal on 4th-and-5 from 10, but MICHAEL FITZPATRICK's completion to ERIC COWAN was a yard shy of the first down.
  • Montclair State was able to record a safety and get on the board with just a minute to go in the half. JAKE CUSANO brought down Bopp in the endzone for a safety, cutting the deficit to 7-2.
  • The two sides traded punts in the third quarter before NICHOLAS BURGESS forced a fumble on the Lions 34-yard line. The Red Hawks converted a fourth down on the possession, but a personal foul brought it back to the 32-yard line. Facing another fourth down, Murdock linked up with JAMIE HAMILTON for a 32-yard touchdown, putting Montclair up 8-7.
  • Bopp was picked off on the ensuing possession, with MIKE RAMOS stepping in front of a pass and returning it 29 yards. The Red Hawks punted on the possession before TCNJ missed a field on their next trip down the field.
  • The Lions regained the lead early in the fourth, with Bopp tossing a TD to Thomas Burke. The two-point conversion was successful, and TCNJ pulled back in front 15-8.
  • The Red Hawks pulled even at 15 after a 7-play, 63-yard drive was finished off with a three-yard plunge from ABELLANY MENDEZ. Mendez picked up 17 yards on the ground during the drive as Murdock tallied completions to Cowan and MATT SPATUCCI.
  • Fitzpatrick pinned the Lions at their own 21 with 28 seconds, and Bopp recorded a pair of completions to Burke. The second one was aided by a 15-yard face mask penalty, putting the ball at the Montclair 26 with two seconds to go. Bobby Wortman stepped up and drilled the 43-yard field goal at the buzzer, giving the Lions the 18-15 victory.
