Volleyball Sweeps Past Mount St. Mary, Brooklyn in Home Tri-Match

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team notched wins over Mount St. Mary and Brooklyn College Saturday.
 
Montclair topped Mount St. Mary 25-13, 25-16, 25-7 before edging Brooklyn 26-24, 25-23, 25-14. Brooklyn notched a three-set triumph over Mount St. Mary in the middle match of the day.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (7-8) used a 7-0 run midway through the opening set against Mount St. Mary (7-6), including a pair of aces from CARLY WATERMAN. Montclair State finished the first set with a 4-0 rally, capped off with a double-block from SKYE RAMSEY and MIA CAPRIGLIONE.
  • Montclair State took a double-digit lead in the second period, with the spurt finished by a DELANEY ST. PIERRE service ace. The Knights got within eight, but a service error pushed the Red Hawks' advantage to 2-0.
  • The Red Hawks controlled the third set, notching 13 of the first 17 points. After a side-out from MSM, Capriglione tallied 10 consecutive points before Mount St. Mary added two points to stop the run. Kills from Waterman and ELIZABETH KILLEEN handed the third set to Montclair as they completed the sweep.
  • Against the Bulldogs (8-8), Montclair raced out to a 19-9 lead, as NADYA ACKERMANIAN posted back-to-back kills to make with 18-9. Brooklyn stormed back, scoring 13 of the following 14 markers to grab a two-point advantage.
  • LEAH HIGGINS stopped the run with a kill before Capriglione served up an ace. Montclair used two unforced errors to bring up set point before Tessa Winkleman notched a kill to even things at 24. GIANNA ARIAS tallied a kill before Higgins served up an ace to put MSU up 1-0.
  • It was more of the same in the set, with Montclair taking a 10-3 lead with EMMA HATCHER and KATIE RODMAN at the service line. Brooklyn bounced back to take several slim leads before consecutive St. Pierre kills made it 20-18 MSU.
  • St. Pierre pinned down an EMILY CARCICH set to make it 24-21 Montclair, yet Brooklyn continued to fight and trimmed the deficit to 24-23. Waterman slammed down a St. Pierre set to give MSU a 2-0 edge in the match.
  • The back-and-forth third set was close before Montclair tallied a pivotal 8-0 spurt with St. Pierre serving. The Bulldogs got within seven twice, but Arias capped off the match with a kill off a Carcich assist to complete the sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • The Red Hawks held Mount St. Mary to a .000 hitting percentage (18-18-65) while hitting a blistering .433 (37-8-67). The .433 marked their best-hitting % of the year while MSM became the second team (joining Gallaudet) to hit .000.
  • Killeen paced the Red Hawks with a career-high eight kills against just one error.
  • Capriglione tallied six kills, six digs, and five blocks in the three-set win over Mount St. Mary.
  • Higgins tallied 10 kills and 14 digs while St. Pierre posted 25 assists and 13 digs against Brooklyn.
  • Arias and Higgins tallied three rejections apiece in the win over Brooklyn.

The Red Hawks resume NJAC action Tuesday as they host NJCU at 7 pm.
