Rutgers-Camden Outlasts Volleyball In Five Sets

Camden, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team was outlasted by Rutgers-Camden in five sets during New Jersey Athletic Conference action Tuesday.

The Scarlet Raptors (9-9, 4-2 NJAC) topped the Red Hawks (9-10, 2-4 NJAC) 25-23, 23-25, 10-25, 25-22, and 22-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded rallies in the first set before MIA CAPRIGLIONE served up four straight markers to give Montclair a 13-7 lead. The hosts battled and took a 16-15 edge before EMMA HATCHER served an ace, and CARLY WATERMAN pinned down a kill to make it 18-16 Montclair.
  • The Red Hawks again took a two-point lead at 21-19 before Camden rattled off three in a row to sneak back in front. A LEAH HIGGINS kill, and an unforced attack error pushed MSU back up 23-22, but RU-C notched the final three points to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Rutgers-Camden rode the momentum to race out to a 10-2 advantage in set two, and the lead swelled to nine at 18-9 on an Isabella Choice kill. Higgins delivered consecutive service aces to make it 18-12 but missed on her next attempt as Camden regained the seven-point edge.
  • Hatcher stepped to the service line after a solo block from SKYE RAMSEY and delivered six straight markers to pull the frame even at 19. Ramsey was the catalyst, notching three kills during the run.
  • Rutgers-Camden would take a 23-22 lead, but Montclair State finished with the final three points, including two with JULIA VARGO serving. The Red Hawks evened the match at one thanks to a set-clinching kill from Higgins.
  • The Red Hawks cruised in set three, taking nine of the first 12 points, with the last three coming on unforced errors. Camden closed to within three at 12-9, but KATIE RODMAN delivered nine consecutive points to break the stanza open.
  • Montclair State pushed the match to the brink with the final four points of set three, with GIANNA ARIAS slamming down two kills before teaming with DELANEY ST. PIERRE for set point.
  • Neither side could take control early in the fourth period, but a 6-1 Scarlet Raptor rally extended their lead to 17-12. The Red Hawks continued to fight back, getting the margin to three on a Dyamond Free attack error.
  • Montclair State fended off four straight set points, including two kills from Waterman, but Kaitlyn Parrish notched a final kill to force a fifth and deciding stanza.
  • Montclair State used a 6-1 run to grab an 11-6 advantage with the fifth set tied at five. Higgins delivered two aces, while Hatcher added one during the spurt.
  • The hosts refused to go down quietly, reeling off eight of the next nine to bring up match point. The period saw ties at 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 before Choice and Erica Nebrich recorded kills to conclude the match.
