Volleyball Sweeps William Paterson In NJAC Match

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team returned to the win column with a straight-set New Jersey Athletic Conference triumph over William Paterson University Thursday.
 
The Red Hawks (10-10, 3-4 NJAC) topped the Pioneers (9-12, 1-5 NJAC) 25-19, 25-17, and 25-20.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks fell behind 5-1 in the opening set before KATIE RODMAN stepped up to the service line and delivered three consecutive aces. Montclair State used an 8-1 spurt with EMMA HATCHER and DELANEY ST. PIERRE serving. CARLY WATERMAN aided the run with two kills to help pad the lead.
  • The Pioneers closed within five on back-to-back kills from Inaya Jones, but the Red Hawks recorded five of the final points to claim set one. SKYE RAMSEY pinned down a St. Pierre set to take the opening frame.
  • The Red Hawks notched 10 of the first 16 points in the second period but broke the set open with six straight markers from rookie MIA CAPRIGLIONE. LEAH HIGGINS pounded down back-to-back kills to cap the run off.
  • A St. Pierre kill brought up set point, yet the Pioneers refused to go away and tallied three points before an attack error handed the second stanza to the Red Hawks.
  • William Paterson leaped out to an 8-2 edge in the third frame before Montclair State started to mount a comeback. A St. Pierre ace trimmed the deficit to 11-9, and ADDISON CASTLES served up four consecutive points to push Montclair State in front 18-16.
  • The Pioneers pulled even at 18 before MSU capped the game with a 7-2 rally. William Paterson got within two, but NADYA ACKERMANIAN slammed down two kills, setting up match point. Higgins punctuated the match with a kill off a St. Pierre set to complete the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Higgins and Waterman combined for 21 kills and 15 digs, as Waterman hit .364 (10-2-22) in the victory.
  • With her 10 kills, Waterman moved into fourth place on the all-time kills list and has 1,084 in her career.
  • St. Pierre handed out 33 assists with six digs, as EMMA HATCHER paced the defense with 12 digs.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks head to Madison, NJ, Saturday to face Sarah Lawrence and Drew in a tri-match beginning at noon.
