Campbell Scores Twice As No. 13/18 Women's Soccer Hangs On To Beat TCNJ 3-2

Ewing, NJ – KIMBERLY CAMPBELL scored twice in the second half, and the No. 13/18 Montclair State women's soccer team held on to top No. 10/12 TCNJ 3-2 Saturday.

The Red Hawks (13-1, 5-1 NJAC) knocked off TCNJ (11-2-1, 5-1 NJAC) for the first time since October 4, 2014, despite being outshot 24-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions nearly broke through in the 11th minute as Sophia Vieira's shot glanced off the crossbar. Rookie KYLIE PRENDERGAST had tries early on that did not connect, with Corinne Byrum making a 16th-minute save.
  • TCNJ continued to pepper the Montclair State backline with shots, taking four midway through the period, including one save from HALEY MARTIN.
  • The Red Hawks, who only had one shot on target through the first 38 minutes, took advantage of a foul in the box in the 39th minute. AILEEN CAHILL stepped to the spot and converted the penalty kick to give Montclair a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions again started strong in the second half, with Emma Pascarella hitting the post in the 54th minute and having another chance stopped in the 55th.
  • Montclair State doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. Cahill slipped a pass to Campbell, who beat the defenders, went one-on-one with Byrum, and beat the goalkeeper for her fourth marker of the year.
  • The senior Campbell made it 3-0 thanks to a solid individual effort. Campbell split the defenders and fired a shot, extending the Red Hawks' advantage to three.
  • The Lions got a goal back in the 78th minute, with Lindsay O'Keefe finding Victoria D'Imperio. D'Imperio took a shot that went into the left side of the goal to trim the gap to two.
  • TCNJ made it interesting, netting their second goal of the match with 3:23 to go. Ava Curtis ripped a shot from the 25-yard line that went in, shrinking the margin to 3-2.
  • The Lions had one final try as they were awarded a corner kick with 35 seconds to go. Gianna Coppola got her on it, but JESSICA DESARNO blocked the chance, and the Red Hawks cleared the ball out to cement the win.
