Volleyball Cruises Past Rutgers-Newark in NJAC Play

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team swept Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
 
The Red Hawks (12-11, 4-4 NJAC) knocked off Rutgers-Newark (0-16, 0-7 NJAC) 25-11, 25-13, and 25-15

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rutgers-Newark evened the first set at eight before the Red Hawks embarked on a 7-1 spurt to break the game open. NADYA ACKERMANIAN slammed down two kills during the run as SKYE RAMSEY contributed a kill and an ace.
  • Montclair State capped the frame with a 10-1 rally, with MIA CAPRIGLIONE and KATIE RODMAN each notching five points on the service line. Rodman polished the set off with a service ace to put MSU up 1-0.
  • The Red Hawks raced out to an 8-3 edge in the second stanza, as the team used four unforced errors to build the lead. An Alexa Rivera kill shrunk the gap with four, but Montclair State went on the attack with seven straight points, including a double block from Ackermanian and ELIZABETH KILLEEN.
  • RU-N got within nine, but a SHELLEY EATON ace and LEAH HIGGINS kill brought up set point. After Rutgers-Newark fended off two points, a service error pushed the MSU lead to 2-0.
  • The two sides traded rallies early in the third period, with Rutgers-Newark creeping in front 8-7 on an attack error.
  • With DELANEY ST. PIERRE serving, the Red Hawks turned a one-point lead into a double-digit advantage. Killeen notched three kills, and a block as Ramsey also tallied three kills.
  • The Scarlet Raiders notched four straight points late in the frame, but Montclair State finished the victory with a double-block from GIANNA ARIAS and NICOLE NAVARRO.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Scarlet Raiders hit -.136 over the three sets, the lowest hitting percentage allowed by the Red Hawks this season.
  • Higgins paced the Red Hawks with 11 kills, as St. Pierre handed out 15 assists.
  • Arias and Killen notched three block assists, with ADDISON CASTLES and St. Pierre recording a team-high eight digs. 
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks visit Trinity (Conn.) on Thursday, with the first serve scheduled for 7 pm.
