Field Hockey Doubles Up William Paterson, 4-2

Wayne, NJ – The Montclair State field hockey team received goals from four student-athletes en route to a 4-2 victory over William Paterson in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Red Hawks (9-6, 3-1 NJAC) broke through 2:26 into the second quarter. The team could not capitalize on three consecutive penalty corners, but after LINSEY CHAMPA received a pass down low, she fed CARLIE VAN TASSEL. The junior slammed the ball into the right corner of the net for her team-leading seventh marker of the year.
  • The Red Hawks limited the Pioneers (2-7, 1-4 NJAC) to just two shots over the first three quarters and doubled their lead in the third. GAB MAISTO inserted a penalty corner and got to the front of the goal. Maisto scored, with classmate TORI SUTERA picking up the assist.
  • The Pioneers could not do much with two penalty corners midway through the period, and Montclair took a 2-0 edge into the fourth.
  • ALEXA ANTONELLI was denied by goalkeeper Kourtney Hartzel 2:42 into the fourth but rebounded to score her second goal of the season in the 50th minute. She rifled a shot from the arc in front of the goal, extending the lead to three.
  • William Paterson got on the board in the 52nd minute, with Jillian Bigos putting home a Megan Hoopes pass. The lead shrunk to one nearly two minutes later, with Catie Wilson knocking in a Jillian Bigos pass.
  • Antonelli was denied once again by Hartzel with 1:42 to go, but KELLY WESTERVELT poked home the rebound, helping establish the final margin.

  • The Red Hawks held a 13-5 advantage in the shot department while also leading 14-5 on corners.
