Field Hockey Clipped by No. 1 Rowan, 3-1

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 1 Rowan University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Saturday.

With the victory, Rowan (15-1, 5-0 NJAC) claimed the NJAC Regular Season Championship. Pending the results of Ramapo/TCNJ, the Red Hawks can clinch a berth in the NJAC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter featured 14 shots, and Montclair State (9-7, 3-2 NJAC) put the first shot on goal. CARLIE VAN TASSEL had her attempt in the fourth minute stopped by goalkeeper Abby Hainesworth.
  • LAUREN PICKUL made two denials midway through the opening frame before Hainesworth rejected SADIE EICHLIN in the 13th minute. Pickul made one final save with six seconds to go in the period, and the game remained scoreless entering the second.
  • The senior goalkeeper made a big stop in the 20th minute, denying Kristiina Castagnola on a penalty stroke. The Red Hawks took the momentum and opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Van Tassel intercepted a pass, dribbled in, fended off a defender, and ripped a shot for the goal, giving MSU the 1-0 lead.
  • The Profs held Montclair without a shot in the third quarter and pulled even in the 40th minute. A pass from the right side of the goal was batted around before Amber Powell knocked the loose ball home.
  • Rowan took their first lead of the day in the 50th minute, with Julia Patrone shooting from the middle of the circle. The visitors finished off the scoring in the 53rd minute, as Patrone had her initial shot blocked. The rebound went to Vanessa Didonato, who capitalized and scored to make it 3-1.
  • The Red Hawks looked for more opportunities late, but a try by GAB MAISTO was blocked, and Van Tassel had an attempt sail wide.
