No. 10/10 Men's Soccer Clinches NJAC Regular Season Championship Behind Lukovic Hat-Trick

Wayne, NJ – Sophomore AMER LUKOVIC recorded his first career three-goal game as the No. 10/10 Montclair State men's soccer team clinched the New Jersey Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship with a 4-1 win over William Paterson Wednesday.

With the victory, Montclair State has clinched the No. 1 seed in the NJAC Tournament, which begins on October 29. It's the third time in the last four seasons and the ninth time overall the team has locked the No. 1 seed.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither side could put a shot on goal until Montclair (12-1-3, 7-0-0 NJAC) saw JUSTIN GOLDBERG's 22nd-minute try stopped. JACOB BARTNIK had the next attempt, but Thomas Hatch denied him in the 27th minute.
  • The Red Hawks broke through in the 29th minute, Lukovic notching his first of the night. Bartnik corralled a long pass from the backline and one-tapped it to Lukovic, who fired and beat a diving goalkeeper to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
  • Montclair State took the 1-0 edge into halftime, despite holding a 10-2 advantage in shots.
  • Beginning the second half, Montclair State doubled their lead in the 50th minute. IAN CHESNEY sent a free-kick into the box, where JANBI KAGHADO was there to smash the try into the back of the net for second marker of the season.
  • The Pioneers (4-8-2, 1-5-1 NJAC) cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute. Owen Stahl flicked on a free-kick by Opeoluwa Olakoko, and Alfredo Rojas converted to cut the lead in half.
  • Stahl was whistled for a foul in the box in the 74th minute as he took down JOSIAH CRAWFORD, cutting across the box. Lukovic stepped and drilled the penalty kick, re-establishing the two-goal lead.
  • The sophomore capped off his hat trick 1:21 later, as Lukovic touched a ball to OWEN MURPHY, who deftly sprung Lukovic into the box. Lukovic finished the chance and registered the first hat trick of his career.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lukovic's hat trick was the first by a Red Hawk since EDWIN MELENDEZ netted three against CCNY on October 25, 2021.
  • Crawford added four shots in the victory, with Goldberg notching three.
