Volleyball Tops Hunter, Widener in Home Tri-Match

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State volleyball team took down Hunter College and Widener in a home tri-match Saturday.
 
The Red Hawks (15-11) knocked off Hunter 25-20, 25-19, and 25-17 before topping Widener 29-27, 25-23, 20-25, and 25-16.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (VS. HUNTER)
  • The Red Hawks constructed a 6-2 run to open a five-point lead on the Hawks, including three consecutive kills from DELANEY ST. PIERRE.
  • Hunter battled back and used an 8-3 spurt of their own to trim the deficit to two at 20-18. CARLY WATERMAN stopped a run with a kill, and a pair of unforced errors brought up set point. Montclair State was victorious after a Hawk service error, putting the team up 1-0.
  • Montclair pulled in front 8-4 in the second set, with LEAH HIGGINS capping off a 4-0 run with an ace. A 5-1 rally, punctuated by a double-block from GIANNA ARIAS and St. Pierre, extended the lead to 16-10, but Hunter closed to within three at 21-18.
  • The Red Hawks clinched the second set as Hunter committed consecutive attack errors, putting MSU up 2-0.
  • Hunter stormed out of the gates in the final frame, tallying six of the first nine points. Montclair State fought back as St. Pierre added eight straight points on the service line. NADYA ACKERMANIAN recorded two kills as MIA CAPRIGLIONE finished the run with a kill of her own.
  • The Hawks got within a pair, but KATIE RODMAN served six points, including an ace, to extend the lead to 23-15. Waterman would finish the match by setting down a kill off a great set from St. Pierre.
HOW IT HAPPENED (VS. WIDENER)
  • The Red Hawks jumped to a 9-3 edge in the opening period against Widener, including a pair of solo blocks from Arias. A Rodman service ace and a kill from Higgins stretched the gap to 20-14, but Widener went on a 9-1 spurt to take a 24-22 edge.
  • Waterman stopped the run with a kill, and two attack errors pushed MSU to a set point. They couldn't capitalize with Widener recording three of the following four. Montclair finally took over, seizing the last three points to go up 1-0.
  • Neither side gained more than a two-point advantage in the second stanza early on before Widener pulled in front 19-16. St. Pierre again was the catalyst, driving home a pair of aces during a set-turning 6-0 run. Higgins finished the period with a kill, and Montclair led 2-0.
  • Montclair State led 12-9 midway through the third set, but the Pride tallied eight of the next nine to jump in front 17-13. The Red Hawks would get no closer than three, and Widener was able to force a fourth period.
  • With the Pride up 14-13 in the fourth, Ackermanian and Higgins tallied kills to give Montclair a two-point edge. Widener cut the gap in half on a kill from Rachel DiCarlo, but Rodman finished the match off with the last eight points, including two service aces to cement the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ackermanian tallied a team-high 10 kills against Hunter, as St. Pierre filled the stat sheet with 29 assists, seven kills, seven digs, and three blocks.
  • EMMA HATCHER picked up a team-high 14 digs in the victory over Hunter.
  • Higgins tallied 18 kills and 12 digs against Widener, with Waterman adding 11 kills and eight digs.
  • St. Pierre posted a double-double of 40 assists and 11 digs to go along with six kills as Arias tallied five blocks (two solo, three assists) against the Pride.
  • Waterman and Higgins both eclipsed 1,100 career kills on the day.
UP NEXT
The Red Hawks visit No. 6 NYU on Tuesday at 7 pm, with the match being held on the campus of St. Francis-Brooklyn.
