Lukovic Scores Twice To Lead Men's Soccer To NJAC Championship Game

Montclair, NJ – AMER LUKOVIC scored twice, including the game-winner with just over 11 minutes to go, as the top-seeded Montclair State men's soccer team topped No. 5 Rutgers-Camden Tuesday.

With the win, Montclair State (15-1-4) advances to the NJAC Championship Match against No. 3 Rowan Friday at 7 pm at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks got on the board in the 12th minute, as IAN CHESNEY sent a long ball over the top to Lukovic. The sophomore fought off a defender and fired a left-footed strike to the far post for his team-leading 10th goal.
  • Lukovic was stopped in the 14th minute by goalkeeper Sean Boen before classmate OWEN MURPHY was denied in the 27th minute.
  • The Red Hawks' defense clamped down in the opening 45 minutes, holding the Scarlet Raptors to one shot while tallying 10 as a team.
  • The Clifton, NJ native was stymied twice early in the second half by Boen before the guests leveled the game in the 49th. After a foul in the box, Christian McCartney converted the ensuing penalty kick and evened the game at one.
  • The Red Hawks nearly found the game-winner in the 78th minute, as JANBI KAGHADO's shot from in close was deflected and rolled in on Boen.
  • After coming close on several chances, Montclair State got the deciding goal in the 79th minute. CHRIS FONTANAZZA and Kaghado executed a perfect give-and-go, springing Kaghado into the box. The senior fed Lukovic, who notched an off-balance shot that tucked just inside the far post, giving MSU the 2-1 lead.
  • Staked to the lead, the Scarlet Raptors notched just one shot over the final 11 minutes that SHANE KEENAN saved, propelling the team back into the NJAC Championship.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Lukovic tallied a career-high 10 shots, becoming the first Red Hawk with 10+ shots in a game since Mike Olla against Christopher Newport in 2016.
  • Keenan made two saves to earn the victory, as Boen denied nine in the setback.
