Higgins Becomes Program Leader In Kills as Volleyball Advances To NJAC Semifinals

Camden, NJ – LEAH HIGGINS became the program leader in career kills as the fifth-seeded Montclair State volleyball team rallied to top fourth-seeded Rutgers-Camden in four sets in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Quarterfinals Tuesday.

With the win, Montclair State (17-12) advances to the NJAC Semifinals and will face top-seeded Rowan Thursday at 7 pm in Glassboro, NJ.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Much like when the two sides met in the regular season, Rutgers-Camden claimed the first set. The Scarlet Raptors never looked back after a 5-2 spurt early in the frame, and Montclair would get as close as two the rest of the way.
  • Montclair did fight in the opening frame, cutting the six-point deficit to two after kills from DELANEY ST. PIERRE and NADYA ACKERMANIAN, coupled with a double-block from Ackermanian and MIA CAPRIGLIONE. Isabella Choice tallied a kill on set point to put the hosts up 1-0.
  • With the team trailing 5-4 in the second period, EMMA HATCHER served consecutive points, pushing MSU in front. Camden tied the frame eight, but Montclair embarked on a 13-1 spurt as Ackermanian and Higgins delivered a pair of kills during the run. An unforced service error by RU-C leveled the match at one-all.
  • The Red Hawks once again strung together points to leap ahead 11-6, scoring eight of nine points during the early stages. Rutgers-Camden got within one, but CARLY WATERMAN notched four straight markers, including an ace, to extend the lead.
  • The guests pushed Rutgers-Camden to the brink with the final four points, as Higgins, St. Pierre, GIANNA ARIAS, and Waterman finished the frame with kills.
  • Montclair took advantage of three consecutive attack errors during a 6-1 rally in the fourth period and extended the lead to nine with a Waterman kill.
  • Higgins broke the record for kills to give MSU a 7-3 lead in the period, and she tallied three additional kills late in the set to help up match point. Waterman punctuated the match by slamming home an overpass, giving the Red Hawks the 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Higgins notched a team-high 19 kills while recording 13 digs, putting her career total at 1,148. She surpassed Heather Aciz, who registered 1,143 from 2003-2006.
  • Waterman (21 digs, 14 kills) and St. Pierre (37 assists, 15 digs) posted doubles, while Capriglione notched seven total blocks.
